Poor dental hygiene often causes gum disease (Gingivitis). Gum disease is an inflammatory disease of the support structures of the teeth, including bone, gum tissue and the ligaments which unite the teeth to the bone. Advanced and chronic gum disease is known as periodontitis.

Symptoms
Symptoms of gum disease may include gums that bleed easily, especially when brushing and flossing; swollen or puffy gums; bad breath, a strange taste in the mouth and, in more serious cases, loose teeth. At the most advanced stage, gum disease will result in tooth loss.

Treatment
Gum disease can be prevented. Floss teeth to remove food particles and plaque. Brush teeth gently and thoroughly with a soft brush using circular motions and massage your gum line. Do not brush using rigorous motion and hard bristles as this can cause your gums to recede. Brush at least twice a day after meals. Rinse with a mouthwash to combat bacteria.

By doing this and making regular trips to the dentist, you can prevent and address most gum problems.
