Just as permanent teeth are meant to last a lifetime; primary teeth / milk teeth are meant to last until the permanent teeth are ready to erupt.
Your child’s primary teeth are used for chewing food properly, speaking clearly and helping to promote good self esteem. They also reserve space in the jaw for permanent teeth. This helps to prevent permanent teeth from being crooked or crowded.
It is also important to protect your child from painful decay of their primary teeth.

Our patients and their families are provided with a warm, caring and cheerful environment. The physical arrangement of our office is especially child oriented. It’s a place where learning toys, video games, books, television and electronic toys help make your child’s visit an exciting experience. Our desire is to help your child build and maintain a positive attitude toward dental healthcare.

We intercept many developing orthodontic problems by carefully monitoring your child’s growth and development at each check-up. When warranted a consultation with our orthodontist may be recommended. Early intervention can prevent a more serious orthodontic problem from arising.

We provide preventive dentistry for children which includes three areas:
- Preventing fear of dentistry
Through special psychological training and thoughtful office design, the set-up of our practice is well equipped to ensure the development of positive dental attitudes.
We desire to help your child build and maintain a positive attitude toward dental care.
- Preventing Malocclusions (bad bites)
Certain bite problems are easily intercepted at an early age, helping to prevent the need for braces. Our Paediatric dentist works hand in hand with the Orthodontist who is uniquely qualified in the detection and early treatment of these problems.
- Preventing dental disease
With a combined program of good home care and regular preventive dental check-ups, decay and gum disease can be eliminated from your child’s mouth.
We highly recommend the use of Fissure Sealants and Flouride Treatment for preventive dental care.
Sealants are composite / plastic-like material that helps shield out decay-causing bacteria from the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. It is bonded to the tooth surface in a procedure that is quick and painless. It is best to apply sealants to the permanent molars and premolars as soon as they appear in a child's mouth - generally between the ages of six and fourteen years of age. Sealant material bonds to the chewing surface of the back teeth, forming a protective barrier covering the depressions and groves (pits and fissures) of the chewing surface. Decay-causing bacteria normally reside in these groves. By sealing the groves, bacteria are not present and the tooth will not decay in this susceptible area.
Sealants and fluoride are both designed to prevent decay to prolong the life of your natural teeth. Sealants are applied topically to only certain susceptible areas of the back teeth. Fluoride is used to prevent or reduce dental decay on all surfaces of all teeth. It is absorbed by the teeth most effectively and is retained in tooth enamel.

Once the child develops a cavity,it is important to have the decay removed and the teeth filled.A decayed tooth left untreated will result in dental infection causing severe toothache and even fever in some children. In these severe dental infection ,the Pediatric Dentist will have to perform root canal treatment. If the infection has spread so extensively, leaving the roots only, then the tooth will have to be extracted.
A young child may need root canal treatment in order to maintain the vitality of the pulp of a tooth affected or infected by caries, traumatic injury, or other causes.
Keeping baby teeth healthy is an important part of: preserving space in the dental arch, preserving biting and chewing power, maintaining facial beauty, preventing tongue habits, and helping with speech. Root canal treatment is also called dental pulp therapy.
Two common forms of pulp therapy for young children are pulpotomy and pulpectomy.
The pulpotomy procedure preserves the vitality of the pulp within the root. The dental pulp contains the nerve tissue, blood vessels, and reparative cells of the root. Pulp therapy is usually performed "under a rubber dam," which isolates the tooth from the oral cavity during treatment. In a pulpotomy, the diseased pulp tissue within the crown portion of the tooth is removed, while the healthy tissue inside of the root is left alone. The space inside of the treated crown is then filled with a healing agent, and a stainless steel cap is usually placed over the tooth.

Another form of pulp therapy is the pulpectomy. A pulpectomy is needed when inflammation, infection, or degenerative changes have progressed into the root canal portion of a tooth. In this procedure, the diseased tissue is completely removed from the inside of the crown and root. The root canals are cleansed, enlarged, disinfected, and filled with a resorbable material. A stainless steel cap is usually placed over the tooth.
For young children, these root canal treatment may be carried out by the Pediatric Dentist under sedation.
In cases where the child has multiple caries and is too young to undergo these long dental treatment on the dental chair, the Pediatric Dentist can treat him/her under General Anaesthesia (GA) in the Hospital. Dental treatment under GA is a common procedure practised by the Pediatric Dentist for children who are very young and not co-operative at the chairside or for children with severe trauma/injuries.
