| Introduction |
On the chewing surfaces of the back teeth are deep pits, and grooves called "fissures". These are so narrow that even toothbrush bristles or a stream of water cannot clean them. This means that bacteria can live in large quantities in these pits and fissures. As a result, tooth decay often begins here.

| What can be done? |
Fissure sealants can be used.
What are fissure sealants? |
They are special materials used by dental surgeons to seal off pits and fissures from the oral environment.
| How do they work? |
| A sealant forms a barrier that protects pits and fissures against bacteria and fermentable foods like sugars and starches, and thereby helps to prevent decay from starting deep within these fissures. |
| How effective are sealants? |
Many studies have shown that sealants are very effective in preventing decay in pits and fissures. Even early decay appears to stop when covered with a sealant because decay causing bacteria are unable to survive when cut off from their food supply.
The application of a sealant is easy and painless. No "drilling" is required. The tooth is properly cleaned, treated, dried, and the sealant applied. The sealant is then hardened and it forms a protective coating over the tooth.
Recent studies show that a properly placed sealant will last for about as long as a typical amalgam filling. Even if a sealant is damaged or lost, it is easily repaired or replaced.
Any tooth with pits and fissures -- provided that the tooth has not been previously filled and is otherwise free of cavities. The most commonly treated teeth are molars and premolars.
| When should sealants be put on the teeth? |
Sealants are most effective if used as soon as practical after the eruption of afthe tooth. Such early application, when necessary, assures that the pits and fissures are protected before the decay process begins.
