Fissure Sealants

What are Fissure Sealants?

Fissure sealants are a protective coating placed on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, and occasionally on pits of front teeth. The sealants form a hard shield which prevents food and bacteria (plaque) from getting into the tiny grooves of the teeth, thereby preventing tooth decay.

What does this procedure involve?

The procedure is quick and painless. First, the tooth is cleaned and dried. Then, a special liquid is applied and hardened with a UV light. At the end of the procedure, the dentist will check that the sealant fully covers and protects the pits and fissures of the tooth, and that it does not interfere with the bite.

What are the benefits of Fissure Sealants?

  • Provides a barrier against dental plaque and bacteria
  • Enables effective cleaning of the pits and fissures of teeth
  • Prevents the development of dental cavities or dental decay
  • Limit future dental decay on the chewing surfaces of teeth

Do I need Fissure Sealants?

Not everyone, or every tooth requires a sealant. Your dentist may recommend sealants if you:

  • Have teeth with particularly deep pits and fissures
  • Have high risk of tooth decay
  • Are a child with newly erupted/erupting teeth which are vulnerable to decay (see “fissure sealants for children”)
